Bo-Kaap dates back to the 1760s, when numerous rental houses were built and leased to slaves. These slaves were primarily brought from Malaysia, Indonesia, and various African countries by the Dutch East India Company. The neighborhood has a strong Muslim influence, as many of the early residents were Muslim slaves,The vibrant, brightly painted houses are one of Bo-Kaap's most distinctive features.
